Real Madrid captain unlikely to return to makeshift role under Arbeloa

Alvaro Arbeloa’s first steps on the Real Madrid senior bench are being closely analysed, and early indications suggest that one recurring tactical solution from the past is set to be abandoned.

According to a recent report from MARCA, it is highly improbable that Federico Valverde will continue to be used at right-back under the new coach.

This decision is influenced by several factors, starting with the player himself.

Notably, Valverde has never been comfortable operating in that role, despite performing it with professionalism whenever required.

With the dressing room still in a sensitive state following recent upheaval, Arbeloa’s priority is expected to be restoring calm and balance rather than forcing key players into uncomfortable positions.

Asking Valverde to continue filling in at right-back would go against that objective.

So what now?

Arbeloa’s coaching identity also plays an important role in this approach.

Known for his strong belief in youth development, the former defender has consistently shown a willingness to trust academy players when senior options are either unavailable or not fully suited to a role.

In that context, relying on Valverde as a defensive stopgap makes less sense, especially when the Uruguayan’s best qualities are maximised elsewhere on the pitch.

Arbeloa is expected to prioritise using Valverde where he can make the biggest impact, rather than as a positional compromise.

As such, Arbeloa’s background points towards a selection strategy rooted in continuity rather than improvisation.

Internal solution

One name gaining attention is David Jimenez, as Arbeloa has worked closely with him in the youth setup, and trusting a familiar profile at right-back would align with his philosophy.

Importantly, this shift is also influenced by availability. With Dani Carvajal back and fit, the need to experiment with Valverde at right-back is significantly reduced.

Rather than a sweeping overhaul, Arbeloa’s early decisions are expected to reflect subtle but meaningful changes.
