Sir Jim Ratcliffe would appoint Ineos’ Ruben Amorim successor ‘choice’ if it were not for Man Utd fans, claims Redknapp

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has suggested that Manchester United fans have made it ‘difficult’ for Sir Jim Ratcliffe to make Ineos’ ideal appointment of Ruben Amorim’s successor.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Ineos regime at Old Trafford are now back to square one when it comes to their Manchester United manager at the Premier League club.

Ruben Amorim had been Ineos’ handpicked choice to lead the Red Devils after the decision was made for Man Utd to sack Erik ten Hag as the club’s manager in 2024.

The 40-year-old former Sporting CP head coach’s reign lasted only 14 months, with Amorim meeting the same fate as former United and Ajax manager Erik ten Hag did.

Amorim was axed as United head coach last Monday and Ineos are now on the search for the seventh permanent manager at the club in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

The 44-year-old former Man Utd and England midfielder’s appointment came with the surprise news that Steve Holland would be serving as his assistant manager.

Steve Holland and Michael Carrick have not worked together before, but the former England assistant manager is well known for his work with Sir Gareth Southgate.

The 55-year-old newly appointed United assistant manager was Sir Gareth Southgate’s right-hand man during the former England head coach’s reign.

Jamie Redknapp fully believes that United fans are the only obstacle for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos to appoint Southgate as the next Red Devils head coach.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “The first thing everyone is now doing [about Steve Holland] is putting two and two together and saying, ‘He worked with Gareth Southgate.’

“I actually think, if they could get that appointment done, I think Gareth Southgate would be their choice.

“I just think the fans wouldn’t want that and that’s the difficulty. I think Jim Ratcliffe would like Gareth Southgate but I just don’t think it will happen.”

Sir Gareth Southgate’s links to Man Utd have always sparked contention with Red Devils supporters

Sir Gareth Southgate has been out of management since 2024 after the former Three Lions manager stepped down from his role with the England national team.

The 55-year-old ex-England head coach failed to lead the Three Lions to victory in the final of Euro 2024 against Spain at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Southgate was widely praised for his work with the Three Lions, despite never lifting any major silverware as England manager during his reign with the national side.

However, United have been linked with Southgate in the past and Red Devils supporters have found the former Middlesbrough boss to be a divisive figure.
