Carrick, much like United legend Rooney, captured an abundance of silverware at United, including five Premier Leagues, a Champions League and a Europa League.

Rooney’s legendary run at United came to an end in 2017 and the 40-year-old Red Devils icon returned to boyhood club Everton for a brief second playing spell.

Man Utd legend Carrick called it time on his career at Old Trafford in 2018 and immediately transitioned into the United coaching staff after his retirement.

Rooney would ascend to the United captaincy under Van Gaal’s reign, but the 74-year-old Dutchman’s two seasons raised fierce criticism over the style of football.

ESPN has now reported that both Rooney and Carrick told former United manager Van Gaal about the players’ frustrations over his tactical approach at the time.

“The players had had enough of Van Gaal’s tactics, so Michael and Wayne told him to ease off and give them more freedom,” an unnamed Man Utd source told the publication.

Louis van Gaal’s response to the feedback from Man Utd legends Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick in the meeting

According to ESPN, Louis van Gaal acknowledged and appreciated the fact that Rooney and Carrick had approached him in the meeting about his management.

However, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager was unable to adopt a new approach and effectively U-turned down the line during his reign at United.

“Van Gaal listened and respected them for fronting him up, but while he relented briefly, it didn’t last long,” the United source told ESPN.

Van Gaal lifted the FA Cup trophy in his second – and final season – at Old Trafford before he was sacked in 2016 and replaced by Jose Mourinho at the club.
