Michael Carrick initially served as United caretaker manager in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked and before Ralf Rangnick was appointed as interim head coach.

The United legend left Old Trafford after his caretaker spell and Carrick took his first steps into management by becoming the manager of Middlesbrough in 2022.

Carrick impressed during his spell with Middlesbrough and ensured that the Championship outfit escaped a relegation battle in his debut season at the club.

Michael Carrick enjoyed both the highs and lows during his time at the Riverside Stadium, including leading Middlesbrough to the Carabao Cup semi-finals in 2024.

Carrick committed his future to the Riverside Stadium back in 2024, but the former Manchester United star’s managerial run at Middlesbrough ended last summer.

BBC Sport has now reported that a Middlesbrough ‘insider’ revealed that the Man Utd legend was deeply “loved” by everyone around him at the Championship club.

“Never too up, never too down,” the unnamed source told the publication.

“That is Michael. He doesn’t waste 10 words when one will do. At Middlesbrough, everyone loved him.”

Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough experience is now invaluable for his Man Utd interim managerial spell

Carrick was sacked by Middlesbrough in 2025 and the former Three Lions international will now return to the managerial dugout for the first time in 2026.

Man Utd have turned to Carrick and appointed the ex-Middlesbrough head coach as the interim Red Devils manager until the end of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

Carrick’s United interim spell will last 17 Premier League matches in the current campaign and is not expected to extend beyond the summer at Old Trafford.

Ineos are now on the hunt for a new permanent manager at the Premier League club after Ruben Amorim was sacked as United head coach last week.

Amorim’s 14-month Man Utd reign ended after the Red Devils’ 1-1 draw against Leeds United and Darren Fletcher briefly took charge as caretaker manager.
