Five things we spotted from Michael Carrick’s first Man Utd training session, duo return and top star gets advice

Manchester United have held the first coaching session of the Michael Carrick era.

Speaking after he was confirmed as Manchester United head coach, Michael Carrick explained that he could not wait to get out on the grass with his players.

Carrick and his newly appointed coaching staff quickly got to work putting the players through their paces.

Here is a look at five things we spotted…

Casemiro gets one-to-one words

Manchester United’s midfield has been the problem position this season, and hopefully Michael Carrick has a plan to fix it.

He was seen speaking one-on-one with veteran star Casemiro during the session at Carrington, imparting his advice and instructions.

Casemiro has been a regular this season but was dropped/rested for the previous game in the FA Cup against Brighton, after playing only an hour vs Burnley.

Carrick could lean on his experience and leadership in the huge game this weekend.

Now they are both back, how can Amad and Bryan Mbeumo both fit into Michael Carrick’s starting XI?

Let us know how you would line the team up…

Bryan Mbeumo and Amad are back

Manchester United are happy to welcome two key players back to training, after their duties representing their countries at AFCON.

Bryan Mbeumo’s Cameroon and Amad’s Ivory Coast both fell at the quarter-finals stage of the tournament.

Now they are back at base, preparing for the Manchester derby.

The real question is over how they both fit into Michael Carrick’s set up. It was easier to do this in Ruben Amorim’s system with Amad at wing-back.

Now with United set to revert to a back four, both players could be competing for the same spot.

Jonny Evans in the mix

Jonny Evans is now back at Manchester United as part of Michael Carrick’s coaching staff, and he was involved immediately.

Evans only retired from the first team last summer, and he will be very familiar with many members of the squad.

Jack Fletcher was among the players seen with Evans, with the youngster’s first team involvement continuing.

Yes, that’s really Jonathan Woodgate

It’s the photo we thought we would never see, and we still can’t quite believe is real. Jonathan Woodgate in Manchester United colours.

Woodgate is one of Michael Carrick’s assistants, having worked alongside him during his spell at Middlesbrough.

It’s important that Carrick has people around him that he trusts, it is just a bit of an adjustment seeing the former Leeds player wearing a Manchester United tracksuit.

Don’t worry, Luke Shaw is available

Luke Shaw was a surprise absentee from the Manchester United squad against Brighton at the weekend, missing his first match of the season.

It was claimed that Shaw was simply rested for workload reasons, however, due to his terrible injury record over the years, you never really know.

The good news is that Shaw looks to be fully involved, pictured greeting Bryan Mbeumo in the gym as the Cameroon star returned.

Shaw will likely be available for selection this weekend, battling for a place at left-back with Patrick Dorgu.
