Man Utd already want to sign a midfielder who's just like Michael Carrick's favourite player at Middlesbrough

Manchester United are showing interest in a midfielder who fits the exact profile that Michael Carrick is looking for.

Michael Carrick knows how to dominate a midfield better than most, having won 17 trophies during his 12 years as a Manchester United player.

On Tuesday, United confirmed Carrick’s appointment as interim head coach until the end of the 2025/26 season.

It is no secret that United are planning to strengthen their midfield department, although Ineos may wait until the summer to conduct any business.

However, United are interested in Kees Smit, and if a January deal becomes available, the Red Devils could pounce.

Man Utd target Kees Smit is like Michael Carrick favourite

According to reports, United are battling Real Madrid for Smit, a young Dutch midfielder who has been impressing in the Eredivisie.

Smit is expected to cost over £50 million, but AZ Alkmaar have accepted that the 19-year-old is likely to move on sooner rather than later.

Interestingly, Fbref’s analysis of Smit shows that he has a very similar style of play to Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney.

Smit ranks incredibly highly on shot-creating actions and progressive carries compared to other midfielders – the same as Hackney.

During Carrick’s spell as Middlesbrough manager, he played Hackney 104 times – more than any other player he managed. Carrick was a huge admirer of Hackney and he may soon have a similar profile of player at United.

Man United showed interest in Hayden Hackney

In the summer transfer window, United were scouring the market for young midfielders and Hackney was one of the names on the transfer radar.

United scouts were impressed by Hackney when assessing the Championship, but ultimately did not decide to move for the 23-year-old.

Hackney is valued around £25 million by Middlesbrough, and his preference to play as a defensive midfielder makes him a suitable replacement for either Manuel Ugarte or Casemiro.

However, unless United are willing to sanction a move for Hackney in January, it is unlikely that he will be reunited with Carrick at Old Trafford.

Ineos are keen to keep Carrick’s stint as temporary and make a long-term coach appointment in the summer.
