Man United won’t write-off appointing Michael Carrick on a permanent basis but is this who is being lined-up for next summer?

The formation wasn’t the only problem that Ruben Amorim had in his time in charge of Man United.

Just as he arrived, the squad he leaves behind is nowhere near capable of mounting any sort of title challenge with aspirations of Champions League football next season also an outside bet. That the Red Devils will play their smallest amount of games in a season for over 100 years due to their ineptitude in the cup competitions and failure to quality for Europe says it all.

Why Thomas Tuchel is on Man United watch list

Michael Carrick has been appointed as head coach to repair the damage and pick up the pieces left behind by the Portuguese boss, but speculation will continue to surround who could take the reins on a permanent basis next summer. There is no mention of the word ‘interim’ on the official announcement of Carrick, however, unless he oversees a dramatic turn of events, a big name arrival at Old Trafford next summer is expected.

One such name is current England manager Thomas Tuchel who, despite not always being popular, has a Jose Mourinho-esque quality when it comes to winning trophies and getting the job done. He is also one who isn’t afraid to manage egos and drop big players as seen by his handling of players like Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham. Players like Morgan Rodgers and United target Elliot Anderson have seen their stock rise under the German.

Tuchel has won league titles in two countries as well as numerous domestic cups. The jewel on his CV is the Champions League title won with Chelsea after reaching the final with Paris Saint-Germain the season before. In terms of other possible options, only Carlo Ancelotti has a personal medal collection to match.

Is Tuchel being lined up for Man United?

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown will still have connections inside the walls of Old Trafford and, when reacting to speculation over the England job, suggested that Tuchel could well be who is top of the list to take charge after the World Cup: “The England job is going to be one to watch,” Brown told Football Insider. “Eddie Howe is always spoken about with the position, and it’s not long ago there were shouts of frustration from Newcastle fans when things weren’t going well.

“The finger was pointed at him with their away form and other issues, but that’s the nature of the game, I don’t think it’ll impact his future too much. But at the end of the season, if Tuchel goes to Man United and leaves the England job free, I think it’s clear Howe is going to be the favourite. The door will open for him to leave Newcastle and take over at England and he may well be tempted to leave for that opportunity. There are a lot of dominoes that need to fall before that happens, mind, because Tuchel could stay on if England do well at the World Cup.”

“But it looks like it will be something that comes up in the summer and it will be up to Howe whether he is tempted to make that switch.” Tuchel has been adamant that he is only going to be in charge of England until after the World Cup and a club the size of Man United could well persuade him to return to club management and the Premier League.
