Gordon Hill poses big question to Man Utd stars after Michael Carrick appointment, ‘it will be…’

Gordon Hill has shared his immediate reaction to the news that Michael Carrick has returned to Manchester United as head coach until the end of the season.

Michael Carrick became Manchester United head coach on Tuesday following a week of speculation.

Last Monday, it was announced that Ruben Amorim had been sacked following a topsy-turvy first half to the 2025/26 season and a press conference that saw the Portuguese coach question Ineos.

Which Man Utd player do you believe will be the BIGGEST WINNER from Michael Carrick’s appointment?

Darren Fletcher took charge of United’s first team for two matches, but was unable to win any of them. The Reds drew 2-2 with Burnley at Turf Moor before crashing out of the FA Cup third round, losing 2-1 against Brighton at Old Trafford.

Those two games showed that there was no instant lift from the team following Amorim’s exit.

It means Carrick faces an almighty task to secure Champions League qualification for United.

Gordon Hill puts responsibility on Man Utd players after Michael Carrick appointment

Carrick wants to raise standards at United, which will be music to the ears of fans.

The 44-year-old knows what it takes to be a successful United player. Hopefully, that can rub off on the players in the dressing room.

With the first two games against Man City and Arsenal, two title contenders, Carrick faces a difficult start in the hot seat.

United legend Gordon Hill has offered his opinion on Carrick’s return, while wishing the new head coach ‘the best’ and warning that it will be an ‘uphill battle’ with ‘no easy fix’.

Hill took to X, where he wrote: “I wish him [Michael Carrick] the best, it will be a uphill battle, there is no easy fix. Darren [Fletcher] are cut of the same mould, we have seen what Darren can bring and will see what Michael can bring. My question is will the players buy it.”

It’s an important question because Carrick needs to get a tune out of the players. He also needs to settle on his strongest team in the coming months, which is something Amorim was unable to do in 14 months.

Hill, who knows all about the importance of entertaining United fans, is right to demand more from the players. They need to step up and take responsibility if they want to be competing in the Champions League next season.

United will need to be at their best to get a positive result against Man City on Saturday.

Michael Carrick’s first five fixtures

Carrick has a difficult initial run of fixtures as United’s head coach.

It starts with Man City at home before a trip to Arsenal next week.

United will then have more winnable games against Fulham, Tottenham and West Ham.

The Red Devils need to get back to winning ways as soon as possible, or else it could be a miserable end to the campaign like last term.
