Tyrell Malacia is set for talks over his immediate future with Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick. The 26-year-old was part of the club's 'bomb squad' alongside Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho, but those four all secured exits from Old Trafford over the summer.

It was a permanent move to Chelsea for the latter with Antony re-joining Real Betis, Rashford signing for Barcelona on a season-long loan and Sancho making a temporary switch to Aston Villa. Malacia was primed for a deadline day move to Elche, but that collapsed at the eleventh hour.

Despite being frozen and spending the following two months out of the team, the Dutchmen returned to the fold as an unused substitute for the 4-2 win over Brighton. He was named in the following six squads before coming on for the final two minutes against Newcastle United.

Injured stars returning have resulted in him featuring for the under-21s and he scored in a 45-minute appearance for the developmental side against Wolves earlier this week. With his future unclear, Malacia is looking for clarity from Carrick before making a final decision, according to The Sun.

He has entered the final few months of his contract at Old Trafford and as such, a winter window exit has not been ruled out. It has been claimed that there is interest in Malacia but none of those current options appeal to him.

United are not expected to sanction any transfers this month but the return of three players over the coming days will feel like new signings.

Bryan Mbeumo and Amad have already returned to training at Carrington after Cameroon and the Ivory Coast were eliminated from AFCON. Noussair Mazraoui is still at the tournament with Morocco, but will be back in England next week regardless of what happens in the remaining games.

Harry Maguire joined Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo as recent returners from injury last weekend after a two-month absence, though Matthijs de Ligt is still unavailable.

Carrick will certainly be boosted by the Dutchmen being the only senior United player out of action, but he faces a huge task after a challenging last few years.

Despite that, the club's former midfielder, who managed Middlesbrough for three years, is excited by the task that awaits him and several other ex-United stars.

He said: "Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour. I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing.

“I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here.

“There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves.”

It has been confirmed that the 44-year-old will be joined in the dugout by former England assistant by Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans and Craig Mawson.
