The latest manager news amid Man Utd's hunt for a permanent head coach at the end of the season.
United have appointed former midfielder Michael Carrick as their head coach until the end of the season, and the club raised a few eyebrows when they also hired former Southgate assistant Steve Holland. The 55-year-old worked with Southgate for over a decade in the England set-up, first for the U21s and then for the senior team.
Holland's appointment raised inevitable questions about a possible role for Southgate, though it is understood the assistant manager is eager to progress his own career away from the former England manager. After he left the England role, Holland spent four months in charge of Japanese club Yokohama F. Marinos as he looked to make a name for himself away from Southgate before he was sacked in April 2025.

Manchester United stance on Gareth Southgate
Gareth Southgate has remained out of managerial work since he left his role as England manager following their defeat in the 2024 European Championship final to Spain. The 55-year-old has been in no rush to return to the dugout, but would have been available if Manchester United wanted him this month.
Southgate was not discussed for either the caretaker head coach role or a permanent position in the summer, as the club considered other candidates for the long-term role at Old Trafford. It is understood United would like to hire an elite manager with Premier League experience at the end of the season. Speaking in his latest YouTube video, notorious transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano was quizzed on the former England manager and a possible switch to United.
“Southgate’s name always comes up when there is a Manchester United managerial vacancy,” Romano said. “He has an excellent relationship with some people at Manchester United and with figures at INEOS. But my understanding is that if United really wanted Southgate now, they could have taken him. They did not proceed because, at this stage, they have different priorities in their process for appointing a new manager in the summer.
“For now, Michael Carrick is in charge and United will see how he performs. They will then start a proper process for a new permanent manager. At this moment, there is nothing concrete between Manchester United and Gareth Southgate.”
