Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer is close to a return from a calf injury and has options on the table for the second half of the season. Collyer was recently recalled from his loan stint with West Brom.
The 22-year-old suffered a calf injury playing for West Brom against Birmingham in November. Collyer returned to Carrington to receive treatment for the injury and United decided to recall him this month.
The Manchester Evening News understands Collyer is closing in on a return from the calf issue and that his future is up in the air for the second half of the season. There are moving parts in the midfield, which means there is a chance that Collyer could be kept by Michael Carrick.
Kobbie Mainoo's future remains uncertain. The academy graduate has not started in the Premier League this season and could look to leave on loan if his situation does not improve with Carrick in charge.
However, the preference is for Collyer to leave on loan for the sake of regular game time at this stage of his career, and the expectation is that he will leave on a temporary deal in January. The club will only approve Collyer's loan departure once the wider situation has been assessed.
In August, the MEN reported that Collyer had received interest from a dozen clubs in the Championship before choosing to join West Brom. Collyer had some bad luck at the Hawthorns and has already received fresh enquiries from clubs in the second division about taking him on loan.
Hull were one of the clubs to express an interest in signing Collyer in the summer transfer window and their manager, Sergej Jakirovic, recently admitted he would still like to sign him. Ryan Mason spoke glowingly about Collyer's quality and potential during his time in charge of West Brom.
In 2024, a source discussed Erik ten Hag's fondness for Collyer and another source said he records 'freakish' running stats in training that are only bettered by Bruno Fernandes.
Ruben Amorim also praised Collyer. "He has very good legs, he's improving with the ball. He knows what he needs to do to play for this club and feels the club in the right way. He's really humble and when you work hard, you get the opportunity," said Amorim about the midfielder.
Collyer is contracted at Old Trafford until 2027, but there is an option for an additional year.
