Optimism and fear ahead
Manchester United are yet to win a game in 2026, with two draws and one defeat from three games so far, including FA Cup elimination.
One fan summed up the situation, writing: “We are in a bad position. If we do not manage a win against City or Arsenal, we will go the whole of January winless. Bleak.”
Another fan responded with real optimism, commenting: “Think we should get a win on Saturday, atmosphere could be special. Then we’ve just got to go to Arsenal with belief and confidence.”

But the original poster wrote: “Scared. Sadly, City look really good. They are definitely weak in areas, but when you have the attacking output they have, it is always going to be nervy. Will be a huge test for not only Carrick, but for Senne Lammens and whoever is playing in the back four.”
Another comment responded: “Senne Lammens needs to turn into prime David de Gea to save us in the match.”
An inspired message from another fan wrote: “I’m up for this game. United seriously need to perform and fight for the badge. We must dig in.
“On a one-off game, I’d fancy Carrick more than most. He deserved to win for his tactics against Chelsea during his first stint. I’m praying for the same and a little more on Saturday.”

A chance for Carrick to make a statement
Michael Carrick has 17 games to try and save Manchester United’s season, and also build his own reputation in the process.
Carrick is at the start of his own managerial career, looking to learn from a promising spell at Middlesbrough.
Gary Neville has already claimed there is no way Carrick should be considered for the permanent Manchester United job, regardless of what happens.
For now, it’s too soon to look ahead. Carrick will only be looking as far as City this weekend.
