It’s been a quiet January for Manchester United in terms of transfers, but Joe Hugill is the latest young player to be recalled from a loan spell.
Manchester United sent 18 players on loan this season, with many of those players being youthful prospects who left to gain experience at the senior level to continue their development in the professional game.
The loanees looking for senior experience include Enzo Kana-Biyik and Radek Vitek, with both players gaining valuable experience this season.

However, not every loan deal goes to plan. United have recalled Ethan Wheatley from Northampton Town, but the young striker is already tipped to sign for fellow League One outfit Bradford until the end of the season.
United recall players for multiple reasons, but they won’t keep a player somewhere if they feel his development would be served better elsewhere.

Joe Hugill returns to Man Utd after Barnet loan
Joe Hugill becomes the latest United youngster to return from a loan spell away from the club.
The 22-year-old joined Barnet in July but only managed to make six appearances for the League Two outfit.
More United News
Hugill’s most recent appearance for Barnet came in a win over Crawley Town on New Year’s Day.
However, the young striker was unable to find the back of the net during his time at Barnet.
United confirmed their decision to recall Hugill on Wednesday, along with Habeeb Ogunneye.
After joining United from Sunderland in 2020, Hugill has been sent on loan five times.
It remains to be seen what United have planned for Hugill for the remainder of the season.
Hugill only played 90 minutes once during his time at Barnet. Most of his League Two appearances this season came off the bench, with the centre forward often getting less than 10 minutes to prove himself.
United made the right decision to recall Hugill. The next step is crucial for the striker’s career.

Barnet manager compared Joe Hugill to Jamie Vardy and Michael Owen
When Barnet signed Hugill on a season-long loan, manager Dean Brennan was quick to liken Hugill to Jamie Vardy in playing style.
Speaking to the official Barnet website, Brennan said: “We’ve been after this type of player for a long time. Even though he’s tall, his movement and attributes are all in behind.
“He’s got pace, excellent finisher, very dynamic – we want him to look down the barrel of the goal. He’s such an exciting player, he’s like a Jamie Vardy or Michael Owen type.”
It’s a shame that Hugill didn’t get enough opportunities to prove himself at Barnet.
Joe Hugill’s proud record against Liverpool
Back in February 2021, Hugill wrote his name into the record books when he scored four goals in a single game against Liverpool.
United beat Liverpool 6-3 in the Premier League 2, with Hugill hitting the back of the net four times.
According to United historian Tony Park, as per ManUtd.com, only one player has achieved such a feat in a game against Liverpool.
Steve Jones scored four in a 7-4 win for the B-team in August 1977. Funnily enough, Jones was born in Liverpool and had come through their academy.
