Manchester United have recalled goalkeeper Elyh Harrison from Shrewsbury Town. Harrison started for Shrewsbury against Wolves in the FA Cup last weekend, but his minutes in the league were limited.
After missing the opening two games of the League Two campaign due to a minor injury, Harrison started the next four games before reporting for England Under-20 duty in September. Young goalkeeper Will Brook came into the side and helped Shrewsbury to their first win of the season.
Harrison started the two matches upon his return, but Brook was recalled and has kept his place since, which saw him pick up the Shrewsbury Player of the Month award for October. Against Wolves in the FA Cup, Harrison made his first start for Shrewsbury since losing his place in the team, and United have decided to recall him from the loan in the January window.
A statement from Shewsbury confirming the recall said: "Elyh Harrison has returned to Manchester United following his loan spell. The young goalkeeper featured nine times in all competitions, and we thank him for his efforts in our colours. Best of luck for the rest of your career, Elyh!
Harrison's first loan away in the first half of 2024/25 was with Chester FC in the National League North. Harrison kept seven clean sheets, and his temporary stint was considered a resounding success.
There are high hopes for Harrison in the academy and United believe they have a goalkeeper who has the potential to break into the first team, which will ultimately be his long-term goal.
However, the youngster will look to bounce back in the second half of the season after struggling for game time at Shrewsbury. United have recalled a handful of other academy players this month.
Jonny Evans stepped down from his position as head of loans and pathways in December, which means Stephen Torpey, head of the academy, is overseeing loans in the winter window.
