Michael Carrick is in charge at Man United for the rest of the season as an interim manager.
Manchester United have a huge weekend ahead, as they are preparing for the second Manchester derby of the season. Furthermore, it is also Michael Carrick’s first game as United manager, as he will take the role for the rest of the season.
One of the biggest questions around Carrick’s appointment is whether he would get the job permanently if he were to do a good job, much like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did.
Pallister tells Carrick he can get a permanent Man United job
Amid all the speculation about Carrick’s future and the future of the Man United manager role, former United defender Gary Pallister spoke to Manchester World exclusively via SpreadEx Sports, as we asked him whether he thinks Carrick could earn the role permanently.
Pallister said: “If Michael does really well, then I'm sure that he'd be handed the job. He's a young, bright and up and up-and-coming manager, and he's cut his teeth at Middlesbrough.
“I watched some of the football that his team played in that first year [at Middlesbrough]. I've gone on record as saying it's probably some of the most exciting football I've ever seen a Middlesbrough team play. If you can, if you try and reproduce that at Manchester United, then I'm, I'm sure the fans will love his style of play.”
Pallister says Carrick is the closest to Solskjaer that United could have
Most would agree that the most successful since Ferguson left was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as he managed to get United to a second-placed finish, and instilled a ‘feel-good’ atmosphere around Old Trafford.
Pallister believes that Carrick will be able to produce similar results. He said: “Ole knew what Manchester United was all about, and I think that was probably the closest we did get with Ole looking after the club.
“But Michael knows what Manchester night is all about. Knows the history, knows what Manchester United require, and I think he will try to give them that. I'm looking forward to it. I'm thinking, you know, put a bit of confidence into that dressing room, and you know me, because there are some good players in there.”
The Red Devils will hope Pallister’s predictions ring true, especially when they come up against rivals City on Saturday afternoon. He would become a fan favourite instantly with a win.
