Michael Carrick will begin his tenure as caretaker head coach at Manchester United when they face rivals Manchester City on Saturday.
The ex-England international has been appointed as the Red Devils’ head coach for the remainder of the current campaign, following the dismissal of Portuguese Ruben Amorim earlier this month.
Carrick previously had a stint as caretaker manager of United back in 2021, before managing Championship side Middlesbrough between 2022 and 2025.
The Englishman succeeds former teammate Darren Fletcher, who took charge of two games for United having been instated as interim head coach in the immediate wake of Amorim’s dismissal.
Now, it appears that the change of management at Old Trafford has prompted one of their players to rethink his future.
As per CaughtOffside, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is no longer pushing to leave Manchester United and will now wait a bit longer before making a decision on his future.

Mainoo, 20, is a product of United’s academy and enjoyed a breakthrough 2023/24 campaign, before featuring for England at the European Championships in Germany in the summer of 2024.
In total he has made 86 appearances for United across all competitions, scoring seven goals, but he fell out of favour when Amorim was appointed as head coach in November 2024.
So far this term the Englishman has played just 14 times, and has failed to start a single Premier League match.
Last summer Mainoo pushed to leave Old Trafford on loan in search of more regular playing time, but a move never materialised and he ultimately stayed put in Amorim’s squad.
Premier League rivals Chelsea and Italian champions Napoli are both said to be admirers of the central midfielder, who is under contract until the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
