Harry Maguire has been "really impressed" with Michael Carrick and his backroom staff since his appointment at Manchester United. Carrick's return to United was officially announced on Tuesday, with the club confirming he would act as head coach for the remainder of the season.

Ruben Amorim was sacked amid rising tensions with the United hierarchy. Darren Fletcher oversaw games against Burnley in the Premier League and Brighton in the FA Cup in a brief stint as caretaker, and Carrick's first game will come against Manchester City this weekend.

Carrick took his first training session at Carrington on Wednesday. His options for the Manchester derby have been strengthened by the return of Amad and Bryan Mbeumo from the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 44-year-old has been supported in training by a new-look backroom staff of Steve Holland, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans, Jonathan Woodgate and goalkeeper coach Craig Mawson.

Maguire sat down with Sky Sports ahead of the Manchester derby this weekend and was asked for his reaction to Carrick's appointment. "Really impressed," the defender said.

"I know Carras from before, and I spoke really highly of him. He was a magnificent coach when he was here under Ole. He's got great ideas, he speaks really well, and tactically he's really good.

"Now he's had a lot of experience at Middlesbrough as a manager and I'm sure he's going to come here and implement his ideas. He's a legend of the club, and I'm sure the fans will get right behind him, but I must say, with him and all of his coaching staff, I've been really impressed this week."

When asked whether there had been a difference since Carrick's arrival, Maguire admitted the energy had improved. "We hadn't had much time on the grass, but we've had a couple of sessions and I think he's trying to bring new energy, new ideas, without drilling us too much at this moment tactically," he said.

"I think he just wants to bring the energy back into the building. I think that's so important. This club is scrutinised, with a lot of eyes on it all the time, and a lot of people can lose a little bit of energy within that.

"Michael has played here, he's performed in unbelievable teams and has been a magnificent player, so he knows what it's like to win here and what you need in a team and a group of people and staff. I feel he's brought a lot of energy to this week and the players have bought into it."

Carrick's assistant manager, Holland, already has a relationship with Maguire, having played a crucial role in England's success at major tournaments during Gareth Southgate's tenure.

Holland is also familiar with England internationals Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo.
