Michael Carrick said he had had the chance to "share a few things" with Manchester United owners Avram and Joel Glazer and Sir Jim Ratcliffe after they held meetings at Carrington on Thursday. The club's ownership group held an executive committee meeting at United's training ground in a show of support to the new head coach, who was appointed until the end of the season earlier this week.

Carrick took his first training session on Wednesday and revealed he has had plenty of discussions with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, who has been watching sessions on the grass at Carrington. But the presence of Ratcliffe and the Glazer family gave him a chance to hold wider discussions and although the 44-year-old didn't go into details on what had been said, he did reveal the meetings were a chance to talk about the current situation at Old Trafford.

"I've spoken to Jason an awful lot and working closely with Jason and Omar as well over the last few days, we've spoken a lot, as you'd imagine," he said.

"The ownership group were in and around it, it was nice to see them and meet them yesterday and have a small chat with them, taking care of business in some ways. We were able to share a few things, so they wished us all the very best and it was good to see them."

United have made European football their target this season but Carrick was coy when asked what success looks like, saying only he wanted to see improvement from his team.

He also claimed that Wilcox and Berrada had put no expectations on him when handing him a contract for the rest of the season, despite Darren Fletcher insisting they could qualify for the Champions League.

"No, not in terms of it has to be this way or that way," he said of the expectations. "Like I said, we want to be near the top of the league, we want to be top of the league. That's pretty obvious to say, but we've got to take some small steps towards that and European football obviously would be a step forward and we've got to keep pushing."

Asked what success looks like for him, Carrick said: "I think improvement, certainly improvement and helping improve individuals. A big part of what I really enjoy is improving individuals, and in the end, if you improve the individuals, you create a better team.

"Certainly working with the players and improving them with that. There's an element of performance, there's an element of improvement and there's an element of doing what it takes to win in certain ways and certain occasions. So certainly higher up the league we finish, we want to keep pushing and finishing higher up as we possibly can and we'll see where that takes us."
