Manchester United's search for a new permanent manager has taking another turn as a long-term target has announced they are leaving their current employers. The Red Devils have initially appointed Michael Carrick on an interim basis while the board continue to look for a suitor to succeed Ruben Amorim following his surprise sacking just last month.
Now, a potential free transfer is available in the summer and one who has a solid record in the Premier League while winning the FA Cup as well as a CV that includes the Europa League too. That is because Oliver Glasner has confirmed he will not be renewing his contract at Crystal Palace and will leave the club at the end of the season.
Glasner, 51, confirmed during a press conference this week he will be leaving Selhurst Park just days after the FA Cup winners suffered the biggest shock in the competition's history losing to Macclesfield.
“I already informed the club months ago that I wanted a new challenge,” Glasner said on Friday in a press conference. "We had a very long talk, and I told him (chairman Steve Parish) I will not sign a new contract.
"We agreed at the time it was the best to keep it between us. It's the best that we could do that and keep it confidential for three months. But now it's important to have clarity, and we had a very busy schedule so that's why we didn't want to talk about it. Steve and I want the best for Crystal Palace."
Since that announcement, the odds has halved on the Austrian to succeed Amorim as head coach at Old Trafford. Glasner, who lifted the Europa League trophy with Eintracht Frankfurt, has been a long-term target with the hierarchy at the club and this decision could further cement his place on the shortlist of leading the players out at the start of next season.
Bookies William Hill have shortened the odds drastically from 6/1 to 3/1 on the Austrian to take on the Red Devils hot seat. The news still means Glasner is one of the favourites and behind Carrick who still leads the market at 11/10 but many punters will be feeling all roads could well lead to United being led by their second Austrian manager in the club's history.
William Hill's spokesperson Lee Phelps said: "Following Oliver Glasner’s shock announcement that he will be leaving Crystal Palace at the end of the season, we make him one of the leading contenders to be the next permanent manager of Manchester United.
“Glasner is now the 3/1 second-favourite to take over at Old Trafford on a permanent basis next season, only behind current interim boss Michael Carrick at 6/5.
“The Austrian manager will see out the rest of the season at Selhurst Park, with his side 3/1 favourites to win the Europa Conference League and crown the most successful tenure in the club’s history.”
