Manchester United's hunt for a new permanent manager has taken a fresh twist as a long-term target has confirmed they are departing their current club. The Red Devils have appointed Michael Carrick on an interim basis whilst the board continues its search for a successor to Ruben Amorim following his shock dismissal last month.

A potential free transfer is now on the cards for the summer - someone with a proven track record in the Premier League, an FA Cup triumph under their belt, and a CV that also boasts the Europa League. Oliver Glasner has revealed he will not be extending his contract at Crystal Palace and will depart at the end of the campaign.

The 51 year old Glasner announced during a press conference this week that he will be leaving Selhurst Park, just days after the FA Cup winners suffered the competition's biggest-ever upset with a defeat to Macclesfield.

"I already informed the club months ago that I wanted a new challenge," Glasner stated on Friday during a press conference. "We had a very long talk, and I told him (chairman Steve Parish) I will not sign a new contract.

"We agreed at the time it was the best to keep it between us. It's the best that we could do that and keep it confidential for three months. But now it's important to have clarity, and we had a very busy schedule so that's why we didn't want to talk about it. Steve and I want the best for Crystal Palace.", reports the Manchester Evening News.

Following the announcement, the odds on the Austrian taking over from Amorim as manager at Old Trafford have been slashed in half. Glasner, who won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt, has long been on the club hierarchy's radar, and this development could strengthen his position on the shortlist to lead the team next season.

Bookmakers William Hill have dramatically cut the odds from 6/1 to 3/1 on the Austrian taking charge at Old Trafford. Despite this, Glasner remains behind Michael Carrick, who tops the market at 11/10, though many punters believe United could well appoint their second Austrian manager in the club's history.

Lee Phelps, William Hill's spokesperson, commented: "Following Oliver Glasner's shock announcement that he will be leaving Crystal Palace at the end of the season, we make him one of the leading contenders to be the next permanent manager of Manchester United.

"Glasner is now the 3/1 second-favourite to take over at Old Trafford on a permanent basis next season, only behind current interim boss Michael Carrick at 6/5.

"The Austrian manager will see out the rest of the season at Selhurst Park, with his side 3/1 favourites to win the Europa Conference League and crown the most successful tenure in the club's history."
