'Why I'm here' - Michael Carrick gives update on possible permanent Manchester United role

Man Utd will look to hire a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim at the end of the season.

The 44-year-old was appointed as the club's new head coach on Tuesday night, but there was no mention of the word 'interim' or 'caretaker' in the announcement, despite the fact he has only been given an initial contract until the end of the season. United planned to hire an interim head coach to oversee the men's first team until the summer, which will give them time to find a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim.

Carrick will take charge of 17 matches during his spell at the club, with the first at home to Man City in the Premier League this weekend. It is still too early to say whether the former United midfielder will be a serious candidate for the permanent role later in the year, but he could boost his chances if he enjoys a successful end to the season in his current position.

Carrick issues update on permanent United role

Michael Carrick has not even take charge of a match as head coach since his return to the club, but has already been asked about being given the job permanently.

Speaking in the embargoed section of his pre-match press conference ahead of the City match, Carrick was asked whether the board had spoken to him about a possible stay beyond the end of the season.

"No, not at the moment," he said. "I think we're realistic as well, and where we are at the moment, why I'm here and the role I've got to do. That doesn't change how we go about it in the day-to-day and the focus and making decisions for the long-term strategy of the group and the playing squad and whatever that adds on extra and the layers after that.

"I'm certainly not coming in thinking...it's a time where week to week, game to game, we've got to get through it and tick each one off. I think we want to plan to improve beyond this season and however that looks at this moment, it's all I can control is what we give the players and how we create the atmosphere around the group. That's the main focus and we'll see what happens after that."
