Manchester United have engaged in talks with 'one secret midfielder' as they look to bolster their ranks under Michael Carrick

Manchester United have held talks with a ‘secret midfielder’ as they look to bolster Michael Carrick’s ranks for the remainder of the season.

He will be in charge for 17 games before the club seek to bring in a permanent replacement for Amorim. Carrick’s only focus for the rest of the campaign is on the Premier League.

United are in the mix for a top-four spot with several sides in the fight. Carrick’s first game in charge will be the Manchester derby on Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford.

However, those deals are unlikely to happen without Amorim there to now push for them.

The Red Devils could still add players to their squad this month if it makes financial sense - and according to journalist Ben Jacobs, talks have been held with a midfielder.

Speaking on The Football Terrace, he revealed: “There is one secret midfielder that Manchester United have held talks with in the last 24 hours. They are in talks with at least one midfielder, for a loan on a short-term deal. Whether or not it develops, let's wait and see.

"I'm not yet in a position where I can divulge the name. It's a midfielder who would only be available on loan. It would be until the end of the season, relatively economical and they have Premier League experience, and they are currently playing outside of England."

United have been linked with a number of top-level midfielders ahead of the summer with Carlos Baleba, Elliott Anderson and Adam Wharton all on their radar. The trio will not come cheap, with at least two of them commanding respective transfer fees of more than £100m.

Casemiro is in the final months of his deal at the club and he will only remain in Manchester if a new deal can be agreed. United have the option to trigger a 12-month extension on his contract but this will not be done given the Brazilian’s high wages.

Carrick is likely to use a new system with United and the club might just need to add players who adapt his tactical needs. The Red Devils have a chance of Champions League football, and must ensure they do all they can on the recruitment front to help Carrick achieve that goal.
