Bruno Guimaraes is understood to be willing to sign a contract that would see him finish his peak playing years at Newcastle United.

Chronicle Live understands that the Brazil international, who has been linked with Manchester City, Arsenal, Juventus, and Real Madrid in the past, is on a list of stars the club are keen to discuss a new deal with. Sporting director Ross Wilson made a significant statement this week when handing Sven Botman a contract until 2030.

And Toon captain Bruno is also firmly committed to Newcastle with two years left on his current deal. Getting the midfield star to extend his current arrangement, with Bruno reaching his 29th birthday in November, would essentially tie the South American ace down to playing out his peak years at Newcastle and fend off interest from Man City and others for good.

We have learned that while the club will be pushing at an open door to sit down and talk with Bruno on a new deal, those talks have not formally begun at this stage. The Bruno camp are "waiting" for discussions to get under way and for the club to "make their move" but the player is happy on Tyneside.

What is also clear though is that Bruno wants to see the club continuing to show ambition. With the World Cup ahead this summer and Bruno hoping for his best tournament yet, interest in the former Lyon star could crank up during Brazil's tilt at the biggest prize of all.

Despite links with Real Madrid this week, Newcastle have not had any approach for their captain. Speaking on ambition last year, Bruno told Chronicle Live: "Yes I want to win things.

"I have never changed my mind and I still look to make history at this club.

"We have been in the Champions League two times in the last three years, that is unbelievable for us.

"We have to keep that going. There is a big job for us to do here and I want to be part of this team."

When asked what the club can do to stop stars like Alexander Isak leaving in the future, Bruno said: "I don't know exactly what the club can do.

"I am not looking under the table to see the circumstances and can't see everything that is going on. We don't want to lose our best players.

"If we want to be successful we have to keep our squad, we built very well in the summer and we have to go again."
