Newcastle United are eyeing up Juventus striker Jonathan David, according to reports.
Newcastle United are considering bolstering their attack with the signing of Jonathan David from Juventus, according to reports.
The Magpies signed Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa in the summer after selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a British record fee, while Anthony Elanga was also brought in from Nottingham Forest at great expense. However, Eddie Howe’s attack has still been somewhat disjointed at times, failing to score in five of their Premier League matches so far, while seven sides have scored more than them in the English top flight.
Woltemade has bagged a solid nine goals across all competitions, but Wissa has only found the net twice in11 appearances since returning to fitness and missing a big chance in the 2-0 EFL Cup semi-final first leg defeat to Manchester City recently, highlighting how far off full sharpness he remains.
Newcastle United eyeing up Jonathan David move
It would admittedly be surprising to see Newcastle dip back into the striker market, but that’s exactly what they’re considering doing, according to Sports Boom. Their report states that Newcastle are ‘ready to test Juventus’ resolve’ over the Canada international, but that they also face competition from Premier League rivals like Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Wolves.
David rose to prominence with Gent and then Lille, winning a league title and Super Cup with the latter, while registering 146 goals and 45 assists in 315 appearances for the two clubs combined. The 26-year-old joined Juventus on a free transfer this summer and, after enduring a tough start to life in Turin, has hit four goals and two assists in his last 10 combined Serie A and Champions League outings.

David - who is Canada’s record goalscorer with 37 goals in 73 caps - has a contract running until the summer of 2030, and it’s understood that Juventus currently have no interest in selling the striker, whose market value is €35m (£30.3m) according to Transfermarkt. While his immediate future looks to remain in Turin, David is thought to be very keen on a move to England, with the Premier League his ‘dream’ competition to play in.
What next for Newcastle United?
Signing another striker would be surprising. But then again, Eddie Howe’s side face a punishing schedule over the next couple of months. The Magpies have 11 games to prepare for over the next 42 days, at a rate of one game every 3.8 days, spanning Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup commitments.
Included in that run are incredibly tough fixtures against the likes of PSG, Liverpool, Manchester City twice and Aston Villa twice, while seven of the 11 are away from St. James’ Park. With that in mind, not to mention their injury problems this season, a few new faces in the Newcastle squad probably wouldn’t go amiss.
