Man Utd produced an excellent performance as they defeated Manchester City in the Premier League.

The 32-year-old was one of five changes to the United starting line up as they defeated City 2-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime. Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu scored the two goals for Carrick's side, but it could easily have been four or five as they dominated a lacklustre City.

United saw three goals disallowed for offside and hit the woodwork twice as they took control of proceedings from the first whistle. There was plenty of praise for United's attacking threat throughout the match, but just as impressive was their defensive work as they secured only their third clean sheet of the season.

Carrick praises Maguire performance

Harry Maguire shone for Manchester United against Man City in what was only his fifth league start of the season. The experienced centre-back has been limited to just 11 appearances across all competitions and last featured for United in the Premier League when they drew 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur before the November international break.

The 32-year-old rolled back the years with a commanding defensive display in what was another reminder of the immense contribution he can still make at the top level. Maguire tends to be at his best in matches when United have lots of defending to do, and Carrick was impressed with his contribution to the three points.

"I thought Kobbie was great alongside Casa (Casemiro)," Carrick said in his post-match press conference. "Between the two of them I thought it gave us a foundation, really, Licha and Harry and the kind of block, really, and I thought it gave us a really strong foundation. I felt it was a game for experience and knowing what it feels like.

"It was a big ask of H (Harry) and credit to him. I think it could take for granted sometimes what players do, for him to play today and come through it and take him. It was a bit of a calculated gamble as well of how long he could play and could he get through it because he's literally trained for two or three days for the last eight weeks or nine weeks. It just shows you what it means really to him and I thought he was he was fantastic. I thought between him and Licha they were so solid at the back and give us the foundation to build up."
