Man United target £70 million Premier League defender

New Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick oversaw a 2-0 win over rivals City in the Manchester derby on Saturday.

The Englishman was taking charge of his first match since being appointed in a caretaker role until the end of the season, and the Red Devils took the lead shortly after the hour mark at Old Trafford courtesy of Bryan Mbeumo.

Patrick Dorgu then added a second for United, inflicting a huge blow on Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes.

United now sit fifth in the top flight standings, with a game against leaders Arsenal up next, while the Citizens remain second.

Now, away from the action, it has emerged that Man United are interested in a Premier League defender who could cost as much as £70 million.

As per Spanish outlet Fichajes, via CaughtOffside, Manchester United have identified Nottingham Forest star Murillo as a potential transfer target.

The report claims that United view Murillo as a potential long-term replacement for Harry Maguire, who is expected to leave Old Trafford at the end of the current campaign.

Murillo, 23, joined Forest from Brazilian side Corinthians back in 2023 and has since established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League outside of the division’s ‘top six’.

In total he has played 96 times for Forest across all competitions, including 83 appearances in the Premier League.

Murillo has formed an impressive partnership with Serbia international Nikola Milenkovic at the heart of Forest’s defence over the past couple of seasons.

It is claimed that the Brazilian defender could cost as much as £70 million, although it is currently unclear whether or not United are willing to meet that valuation and make an official move to sign the player.
