Manager warned off Manchester United – ‘Ex-players comment on everything’

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has been warned to think carefully about pushing for the Manchester United job.

Thomas Hitzelsperger provides the warning, in a conversation with Blick. He thinks the Manchester United job may not be as attractive as some think it to be.

The Red Devils will be on the hunt for a new manager this summer after sacking Ruben Amorim earlier this month. They’ve placed Michael Carrick in temporary charge but there is no current belief that he will take the job long-term.

That can always change in future depends how his second spell in charge at Old Trafford pans out. A win over Manchester City in his first game was certainly a very positive start to his tenure.

Interim managers have been given the role long-term before too. That was the case with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the past. His positive performances over his interim period led to him getting the job full-term afterwards.

For now, the focus is on other candidates. Glasner is likely to be among those considered. The Austrian confirmed this week that he would be leaving Selhurst Park at the end of his contract.

Manchester United legends encourage pressure

That makes him an attractive option, and he certainly wouldn’t turn down the chance to at least speak to Manchester United. Hitzlsperger, though, thinks he should be careful.

“Crystal Palace coach Oliver Glasner is in talks. I have a high opinion of him, but he needs to consider whether he really wants to do it,” he said.

“The environment isn’t easy. There’s a lot of mistrust, a lot of infighting. The stakes are enormous; the club is huge. The fans still remember the days under Sir Alex Ferguson, and the frustration is immense.

“On top of that, there are countless former players who comment on everything and are very critical of the manager.

“Former professional Michael Carrick is now taking over until the end of the season. I think that’s a good thing. He knows how the club operates and gives the management some breathing room.”
