Man United chasing Wolves midfielder

Michael Carrick’s tenure as caretaker head coach of Manchester United got off to the perfect start as he masterminded a 2-0 win over rivals Manchester City on Saturday.

The ex-England international was named as United’s successor earlier this month, taking charge of the Red Devils on an interim basis until the end of the current campaign.

Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick D0rgu earend United a convincing win at Old Trafford, with Carrick’s side also having had three goals ruled out due to offside.

The result leaves United fifth in the Premier League table, with a daunting visit to leaders Arsenal up next for Carrick’s side.

In the meantime, it has emerged that the Manchester outfit are eyeing a move to sign a midfielder from a struggling Premier League rival.

As per CaughtOffside, Man United have identified Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes as a potential transfer target as they look to bolster their squad.

The report claims that United’s scouts have been monitoring the Brazilian since last summer, with the club perceiving the player as a long-term replacement for his fellow countryman, Casemiro, who is expected to leave Old Trafford this year.

Gomes, 24, joined Wolves from Brazilian outfit Flamengo back in 2023 and has since made more than 110 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Manchester United are said to have reached a verbal understanding with Goems himself about his financial demands, while talks with Wolves are yet to progress.

While a move could be possible this month if the right conditions fall into place, it appears much more conceivable that United could look to sign the player this summer.

The Brazilian isn’t just on the radar of Manchester United, however, with Spanish side Atletico Madrid also said to have identified the midfielder as one of their top targets.

It is claimed that Atletico boss Diego Simeone is keen to add a midfielder to his squad and, while some at the Spanish side have concerns about the cost of a move for Gomes, the La Liga giants could look to sign the player this month.
