Official: Former United man signed by Mourinho sacked after just 36 matches in charge

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant has suffered a major setback in his coaching career.

United career

Grant enjoyed a long spell in the Football League with clubs such as Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley and Stoke City.

He moved to Manchester United in 2018 in the twilight of his career to be a third-choice keeper and remained at the club until 2022, when he retired.

Grant played a total of two matches for the Red Devils but was widely praised for his positive influence on the dressing room.

After retiring, he was appointed a first-team coach at Ipswich Town.

Grant was then appointed manager of Huddersfield Town in May 2025.

Unfortunately, this season has not worked out as the former keeper would have hoped.

Sacking

Huddersfield Town’s official website reports that, “Lee Grant has been relieved of his duties as Huddersfield Town Manager with immediate effect.”

It is also explained that, “Sporting Director Chris Markham will lead the recruitment process to appoint a successor for our Men’s First Team.”

Yesterday afternoon’s loss to nineteenth-placed Burton Albion was seen as the final straw. Grant took charge of 36 competitive games for the Terriers and leaves them in sixth place in League One.

Huddersfield Town Owner and Chairman Kevin Nagle commented, “I would like to thank Lee for his efforts and wish him nothing but the best for his future career.”

He added, “our previously stated aims and desires for the season remain the same, and we will be making a change with those ambitions still firmly in mind.”
