The Michael Carrick era at Manchester United has kicked off positively with a 2-0 derby victory over rivals City in his first match as interim manager. Although this is Carrick's third time leading his former club, this stint carries more weight than his previous caretaker roles.

This also marks the first time Carrick will oversee the team during a transfer window at Old Trafford. This provides the ex-England international with a genuine opportunity to enhance the squad over the coming fortnight.

Given the substantial spending during the summer and slim title prospects, it was always going to be challenging to invest further this month. However, United can still significantly bolster the first-team squad through player sales, with new deals expected to be finalised this weekend.

Sam Mather departs after 14 years

United academy graduate Sam Mather is heading for pastures new this winter and has departed the club after 14 years. He's sealed a switch to Turkish outfit Kayserispor following his failure to break into the first-team picture at Old Trafford.

Kayserispor and United both confirmed the transfer on Saturday, drawing the curtain on his lengthy spell in United's youth setup. It's understood United have permitted the player to leave on a free transfer and will not collect a fee for his services.

"After 14 years my time at Man Utd has come to an end," said the 21-year-old in his farewell message. "I would like to thank all the staff and players who have helped me become the person and player I am today.

"I will always be grateful for my time here and wish the club all the best. On a personal note it's time for me to move forward and I can't wait to get started!".

Mather lifted the FA Youth Cup with United in 2022 and had previously spent loan spells at Rochdale and Tranmere. The winger netted 29 goals and provided 23 assists during his time with United's under-18 and under-21 teams but departs Old Trafford without making a first-team appearance for the club.

Toby Collyer set for another loan spell

Another player set to depart Old Trafford, albeit temporarily, is Toby Collyer, with Hull City keen to secure the midfielder's services. Collyer spent the first half of this season on loan at West Brom but returned to United following a couple of injury setbacks.

The 22-year-old returned to his parent club on New Year's Day, with United announcing he did so to focus on recovering from his most recent injury. A little more than two weeks later, he's poised for another move to the Championship, with Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic confirming a medical is scheduled before the end of the weekend.

"With Toby Collyer we are waiting but I think we have a green light from Man United and I think he will join us on Monday," said Jakirovic this weekend. "This is what I know but we have agreed everything with Man United. He will have a medical this weekend. He is now ready for training."

The midfielder featured 12 times for West Brom during his loan spell but was predominantly used as a substitute. He'll be hoping for more regular action at the MKM Stadium, with Hull currently in fifth position and chasing Premier League promotion.

A reunion with his former side could come sooner rather than later, as Hull are scheduled to travel to West Brom on March 14. Collyer progressed through United's academy system as a highly-rated youngster and has racked up 13 senior outings for the Red Devils thus far.
