Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are eyeing a move for a Manchester United player who is out of contract this summer

Manchester United have a handful of players in the final months of their respective deals at Old Trafford with a number of decisions that need to be made ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

United do have a 12-month option they can trigger in Casemiro’s contract but that is unlikely to happen on the player’s current wages. Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia and Tom Heaton are also in the final months of their contracts.

Malacia is poised to leave the club in the summer and could even depart this month while Heaton saw his deal extended last summer due to his influence around the training ground.

Jadon Sancho is also out of contract this summer and is currently on a season-long loan with Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Reports in Spain from Fichajes claim that Borussia Dortmund are looking to sign Sancho as a free agent when his contract with United expires. The forward joined United from Dortmund back in 2021 and had a loan spell there in the second half of the 2023-24 season.

He helped the club reach the Champions League final but they lost it to Real Madrid at Wembley. He then joined Chelsea on loan last campaign but despite that deal including an obligation to buy, the Blues paid £5m to get out of the agreement.

The Red Devils are “not considering any renewal” for Sancho’s contract. Despite sending him on loan to Villa with one year remaining on his deal, it is a move that made sense for United at the time.

Sancho was in talks with the likes of Juventus and AS Roma last summer but the player’s wages proved to be a major stumbling block as those deals did not materialise as he did not want to reduce his salary.

Up until deadline day, United were facing the prospect of having Sancho remaining at the club on a high wage while not being wanted as part of the senior team under then manager Ruben Amorim.

Manchester World understands that Villa are covering 80 per cent of the player’s wages and paid a loan fee to get him four months ago. While United wanted Sancho completely off the books for a permanent deal of around £21m, offloading him and most of his wage is better than nothing.

Manchester World also understands that United agreed achievable bonuses for Sancho’s loan that will see them get full wage coverage by the time the campaign comes to an end.

While he is set to depart as a free agent without a transfer fee, it does see another highly-paid player leave the club to further clear the wage bill. His former club Dortmund are ready to swoop, knowing the player enjoyed the best spells of his career in Germany.

The player’s wages remain the only potential stumbling block but whatever happens with Sancho, United will not need to be involved in any talks.
