Michael Carrick is one of the favourites to take over the permanent manager role at Man United.

Many suggest that United should wait until after the World Cup, as the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti, and Mauricio Pochettino will all be available. However, others believe that Carrick should get the job if he does well, and he got off to the perfect start.

The Red Devils won 2-0 against Man City on Saturday, in what was Carrick’s first game in charge. It was by far the best performance of the season from United. So, should the board at Old Trafford consider signing Carrick permanently?

Carrick in the “box seat” for the Man United job

Several pundits, such as Gary Neville and Roy Keane, have come out and said that United shouldn’t appoint Carrick as the permanent manager, as they believe the Red Devils should target one of the elite options in the summer. However, after the performance against City, could their opinion turn?

According to Football Insider Journalist Pete O’Rourke, Carrick is currently in pole position to get the job, as he is essentially interviewing until the end of the season. O’Rourke said: “Michael Carrick has got the job now and he’s in the box seat. If he does well, who’s to say he doesn’t get the job on a full-time basis as well? Man United will be looking at all their options in the summer.

“Ideally, they’re looking to bring in an elite manager who can get them back to where they should be. It’ll be an intense race to see who United go for, because there are a lot of other managers in their thinking at the moment as well.”

Neville wants United to sign Tuchel, Pochettino or Ancelotti

As mentioned, Neville has gone on record saying that Man United shouldn’t consider appointing Carrick as their next permanent manager, considering the options that are available in the summer.

He said on the Overlap Podcast when Carrick was first appointed: “I hope he [Carrick] does really well. There cannot be any consideration that Michael [Carrick] takes the job beyond this season. For Michael and for the club.

“We could be sat here at the end of the season where he’s done unbelievably well, and the fans are up, and they’re in the Champions League places, it could happen, and we could all be getting swayed with it. At the end of the season, there’s Pochettino, Tuchel and Ancelotti.”

However, if Carrick does produce games like the Manchester derby regularly, then Neville may have to reconsider his stance, as United could be in the Champions League next year because of him.
