The latest Man Utd transfer and contract news in the final two weeks of the January window.
The 20-year-old was eager to leave United on loan this month in pursuit of regular playing time, in an effort to keep his hopes of a place in the England World Cup squad alive. Napoli were one of several sides interested in a loan deal, with Mainoo only open to a temporary departure from his boyhood club.
Mainoo suffered a reduced role under former boss Ruben Amorim but shone when he made his first Premier League start of the season as United defeated Man City at the weekend. The academy graduate looked rejuvenated in his favoured central midfield position and is expected to play there regularly for the rest of the campaign.

Mainoo set to remain at United
Manchester United expect Kobbie Mainoo to remain at the club for the remainder of the season after he had initially expressed an interest in leaving this month. It is the same situation for forward Joshua Zirkzee, who is not expected to be allowed to leave despite continued interest from Roma in his signature.
The club have not only been concerned by Mainoo’s lack of playing time, but also by the fact that contract talks have been at a standstill over a new deal. Mainoo expressed no interest in discussing a new long-term contract while Ruben Amorim was in charge, but could change his mind now that they have appointed Michael Carrick until the end of the season.
Mainoo might still wait to see who is appointed as the permanent head coach in the summer before he commits to a new contract, though there is already increased optimism that a renewal could be agreed. Taking to social media, notorious transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano issued a brief update on his future.
"Kobbie Mainoo now expected to stay at Manchester United after instant trust by Michael Carrick," he wrote on X. "Mainoo was considering loan move to play on regular basis and develop, never a permanent exit from #MUFC. His contract situation will remain key topic in the next months."
