Everything you need to know about Manchester United's hunt for a permanent head coach as a new name is linked...
Manchester United have reportedly added Borussia Dortmund’s Niko Kovac to their shortlist. The club are actively seeking a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim, who was sacked earlier this month.
Interim boss Michael Carrick remains in charge until the end of the season. While Carrick had a successful dugout debut with a win over Manchester City, the club are still exploring long-term options.
Kovac is reportedly open to a future move to the Premier League. Although he previously turned down an approach from Tottenham, working in England is said to be his ultimate professional goal.
The Croatian coach has a strong track record across several major European clubs. His extensive resume includes management roles at Bayern Munich, Monaco, and the Croatian national team.
United have already made enquiries regarding Kovac’s current situation in Germany. He is nearing his one-year anniversary at Dortmund, where he has maintained an impressive average of over two points per game.
Existing club connections could facilitate a potential move to Old Trafford. Kovac reportedly shares a professional relationship with Manchester United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell.
Despite the interest, Kovac remains under contract with Dortmund until 2027. Dortmund would likely require significant compensation if United chose to appoint him before his deal expires.
Kovac faces competition from other high-profile names on the shortlist. England manager Thomas Tuchel and Marseille’s Roberto De Zerbi are also considered top contenders for the permanent role. Perhaps Carrick's spell could also be an audition for the long-term.
