Manchester United have been advised against appointing Oliver Glasner as their next manager, amid suggestions that the role might be "too big" for him.

United are currently seeking a new permanent manager following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier this month. While Michael Carrick has made an impressive start as interim head coach, Crystal Palace boss Glasner is among those being tipped to succeed Amorim in the long term.

The Austrian confirmed last week that he would be departing the Eagles at the end of the season when his current contract ends. Glasner's position was further scrutinised after Palace's 2-1 loss to Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday, following which he criticised the club's decision to sell Marc Guehi to Manchester City.

However, former United goalkeeper Ben Foster has questioned whether Glasner's achievements at Palace could be replicated at Old Trafford. The former West Brom and Wrexham keeper also expressed doubts about the tactical fit, cautioning that Glasner could encounter the same problems as Amorim by sticking rigidly to his preferred system.

Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, Foster said: "He's the favourite to go and get the Man United job, but I just don't think it would work out for him. I think it's too big a job. He would try and play the same formation that he's trying to play at Crystal Palace with Man United and he hasn't got the players.

"If you see the way that Man United played at the weekend, it was 4-4-2 basically and Palace do not play that way. In fairness, the players that Palace have got are actually really good in those positions They have got wing backs, but it won't work at Man United."

Glasner criticised Palace's hierarchy on Saturday, just days after revealing his plans to resign at the end of the season.

He said: "We feel like we're being abandoned completely. Selling our captain one day before a game - there is no understanding for this. We are preparing and then yesterday [Friday], I get told that our captain will be sold, but why not next week?

"At least he can play this game and then next week, other players are coming back. It makes me really upset. If your heart gets ripped out twice a year, with [Eberechi] Eze one day before a game in the summer and your captain one day before a game - I've just got no understanding."

When asked whether he might depart before the campaign concludes, he said: "I don't know. I always have a huge appreciation for this group of players. I completely trust them. Their character is exceptional and we will stick together and turn around.

"I will never step back because these players deserve Oliver Glasner as their manager and leader and this is what I will do. Sometimes it would help if we had a little bit of support."

Glasner's explosive comments over the weekend reportedly prompted Palace executives to contemplate sacking the manager. However, after discussions took place on Sunday, it was ultimately decided not to dismiss him from his position.
