What Patrick Dorgu has been 'perfecting' in Man United training, it's already paying off

Patrick Dorgu is becoming living proof at Manchester United that hard work pays off with the 21-year-old now in red-hot form.

At the end of November, Ruben Amorim said he feels ‘anxiety’ from Patrick Dorgu when he was in possession of the ball.

The comments from the Portuguese head coach would have hardly inspired confidence, but Patrick Dorgu responded in the best way possible – by going on a brilliant run of form.

There were spectacular claims made about Dorgu when he first joined from Lecce in a £25m deal last January. Now, United fans are starting to see his true potential.

Dorgu has two goals and two assists in his last six Premier League appearances. He has been thriving in a more advanced role since Amorim’s sacking.

Patrick Dorgu’s training is having an impact

United were told that Dorgu is a “machine” before he completed his move from Lecce. He was brought in to add pace, power and physicality to this United side, but he has also added a new dynamic in the final third.

According to Manchester Evening News, inside sources at United say that Dorgu has been doing “loads of extras” in Carrington to improve his performances.

Statistics show that Dorgu’s crosses are improving, and he is creating an abundance of chances out wide.

As per official Premier League stats, Dorgu has completed 15 successful crosses in open play. That is more than any other United player, with Bryan Mbeumo, Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes joint-second with only 10.

It was evident in the 2-2 draw with Burnley when Dorgu set up Benjamin Sesko from out wide following a brilliant build-up move on the left.

Patrick Dorgu can thrive under Michael Carrick

In his first game in charge as interim head coach, Michael Carrick raised a few eyebrows with his team selection to face Manchester City.

Sesko and Matheus Cunha were named on the bench, while Dorgu started as United’s left-sided winger.

It turned out to be a stroke of genius. Dorgu had his best game against City, dominating physically and offering a huge attacking threat on the counter.

Carrick’s style of play has seen United return to a 4-2-3-1 shape with more traditional wingers. For the rest of the season, Dorgu can expect to play further forward on the left flank – a position he is quickly making his own.
