Jamie Carragher names the manager who could rejuvenate Man United's academy stars - it's not Michael Carrick

Man United are drawing up a shortlist of who they want to appoint as their next permanent manager.

However, there is still the belief that United will look to appoint a new manager in the summer rather than handing Carrick the job permanently, unless he does an outstanding job until the end of the season.

Carragher says Howe would rejuvenate Man United’s young stars

One aspect of Man United that has dwindled in recent years is the emergence of young academy players coming into the first team. The likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho were all pushed aside by Ruben Amorim, and Carrick is now tasked with trying to change that trend.

Mainoo could get more of a chance now that Amorim has gone, and Ayden Heaven is also getting more opportunities, but Jamie Carragher believes that United should appoint Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, as he would help get the best out of the younger players.

He said on Sky Sports: “I'm a huge fan of Eddie Howe. The type of football when Newcastle are at their best is high energy going forward, but the real thing I like is that you have to be able to handle the pressures of Manchester United.

"When you're in Newcastle, and you live in that city, it's constant, and he handles it brilliantly. Where I think he could also help is that Manchester United have a problem with young players - a lot of them don't go on to fulfil their potential - but I think Eddie Howe is a great coach."

Would Howe leave Newcastle for Man United?

The biggest issue with Howe is that he already has Champions League football and good backing from the higher-ups at Newcastle. It seems that the former Bournemouth boss is very settled in the North East, and so the offer from United would have to be lucrative if he were to make the move.

For example, if United qualify for the Champions League this season, that would make a huge difference. Howe would likely also want assurances that he will get the backing from the board at Old Trafford.

He is named as ‘head coach’ at Newcastle, and so wouldn’t necessarily mind the whole head coach vs manager debate, but he would likely want a decent amount of say in player recruitment for United. If the Red Devils want Howe, they’ll need to show him how much they want him, as he would be reluctant to leave St James’ Park.
