Jamie Carragher has suggested that Manchester United's potential pursuit of Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone could lead to problems akin to those experienced by Ruben Amorim during his tenure at the club. Michael Carrick, currently holding the reins at Old Trafford on an interim basis, got off to a flying start with a 2-0 victory over Manchester City.

It's thought that the former United midfielder will remain in charge for the rest of the season before a permanent successor is appointed. Names such as Thomas Tuchel, Eddie Howe and Roberto De Zerbi have been floated as possible contenders.

Luis Enrique, Xavi, Gareth Southgate and Oliver Glasner have also been linked to the role. Carrick will oversee proceedings at United until the end of the season, aiming to return the club to the Champions League.

As the search gets underway at Old Trafford, Carragher has been dissecting the options available to United alongside Thierry Henry. On Sky Sports ' Monday Night Football show, the ex-Liverpool defender outlined why appointing Simeone would contradict the club's ethos.

"The Simeone one is really interesting," he commented. "We've just had a chat about DNA. But it's interesting that Roy, who loves the club, and Gary, the same, have both mentioned Diego Simeone at different points in the last 4 or 5 months, that they wouldn't mind seeing him at Man United.

"That goes away from a club's DNA because he is a defensive coach. That's what I go back to in this country, we pick managers on the success they have at clubs.

"You can't then ask a manager because he's successful, like [Ruben] Amorim and asking him not to play three at the back, you're getting him from here to get what he did there here. You can't then ask him to change."

Henry then addressed United's approach to decision-making, emphasising the importance of having a defined vision for their next manager. "If we were here, I would have an internal discussion about what we want to be," he stated.

"I know I'm going back to the same thing but we'd have a clear view of who we're going to get and I think that clubs are sometimes bypassing that discussion. Which direction do you want to take, then it becomes clearer."

Carragher proceeded to identify the manager he thinks United will be targeting. "If you're Man United, I think everybody would want Luis Enrique," he said. "They would have watched how PSG played last year, we're talking about a guy who has won the Champions League twice. I don't think they'll get Luis Enrique. I think there's a good chance that they end up with Thomas Tuchel".
