Mark Clattenburg now says VAR made 'strange' error with Man Utd wronged in unspotted City incident

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg spotted a VAR mistake that went unnoticed in Manchester United’s derby victory.

Michael Carrick masterminded Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City over the weekend, but every supporter left Old Trafford knowing that there should have been more goals.

Statistically, United humiliated City, and the Red Devils had three goals disallowed for offside that spared the visitors complete embarrassment.

Bruno Fernandes cut City apart – now he needs to do it against Arsenal next weekend!

He was extremely unlucky to have a goal ruled out of his own

Mason Mount’s disallowed goal was one of the several decisions that went against United. Diogo Dalot did escape a red card for his challenge on Jeremy Doku, however.

But Mark Clattenburg has now spotted another incident which went against United.

Mark Clattenburg’s verdict on Bruno Fernandes penalty incident

Fernandes dominated City at Old Trafford, creating more chances alone than the entirety of Pep Guardiola’s players combined.

United’s captain put on a masterclass performance, but he wasn’t able to etch his name on the scoresheet.

That might have been different, though, if officials picked up on an incident where Bruno Fernandes was kicked by City midfielder Bernardo Silva in the box.

United in Focus spoke exclusively to Clattenburg about the unnoticed incident, and he said: “Manchester United were very unfortunate not to get a penalty kick for a clear trip by Bernardo Silva on Bruno Fernandes.

“Even though the ball is outside the penalty area, the contact happens inside and a penalty kick should have been awarded and a yellow card for reckless play.

“It’s strange that VAR missed this off-the-ball incident, as they would have surely wanted to know why Fernandes had fallen over inside the penalty area.”

Man United need another Bruno Fernandes masterclass vs Arsenal

Against City, Fernandes showed his footballing ‘genius’. He was at the heart of almost every United attack, and his assist for Bryan Mbeumo’s opener was inch-perfect.

In Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 setup, Fernandes has returned to his favoured No.10 role and the extra freedom in the final third allowed him to thrive.

Up next for United is a trip to North London to face Premier League leaders Arsenal, and Carrick will need Fernandes to be at his best once again.

United’s attack will be facing the best defence in the league, and Arsenal frustratingly kept out the Red Devils in the reverse fixture.

But if United are able to replicate their attacking performance from the weekend, Fernandes can cause havoc at The Emirates.
