Man United are keen to sign a centre-midfielder during the January transfer window, and could push for a swap with Sunderland.
It is understood that United don’t plan to make any big transfer moves in January, as they plan to invest heavily in the summer. One of the positions that United want to improve is midfield, as they have their eye on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
However, United are only expected to make a move for Baleba in the summer, so they could decide to sign a cheaper midfielder in January to help Carrick qualify for the Champions League.
Man United plotting move for Noah Sadiki
Fresh reports are suggesting that the Red Devils are keeping tabs on Sunderland star Noah Sadiki, who has impressed heavily during his first season in the Premier League. The 21-year-old has made 17 appearances for Regis Le Bris’ side in the league this season, becoming a regular feature.
The Congo international joined Sunderland in the summer from Belgian side Union SG; however, he could already be on the move again, as Man United reportedly views him as a cheaper alternative to Baleba, and someone who could help Carrick instantly.
GiveMeSport reports that United are considering making a move for Sadiki, but they have their eye on a potential swap deal rather than an out-and-out transfer. The 21-year-old has an estimated market value of £22m, but based on his age, the Black Cats will likely demand a much higher fee for him.
Man United could offer Manuel Ugarte for Sadiki
The same report by GiveMeSport includes details suggesting that former United boss Ruben Amorim was willing to offload midfielder Manuel Ugarte in the January window, and it is understood that United bosses agree with him, as the Uruguayan midfielder has struggled since moving to Old Trafford.
Ugarte joined United for a fee of £42m in 2024, but has failed to become a regular starter for the Red Devils. Man United could opt to go after Sadiki by offering Ugarte, to give Sunderland a more experienced option, and someone who has Champions League experience with PSG. It may be enough to tempt the Black Cats for a straight swap.
Sadiki would be more the sort of player Man United want in midfield, as he is a high-energy midfielder who plays box-to-box football and can win the ball countless times.
Sky Sports commentator Peter Drury referenced the Sunderland fans’ view of Sadiki whilst covering a game in December. He said: “Sunderland fans say 70 per cent of the earth’s surface is covered by water and the other 30 per cent by Noah Sadiki.”
If United were able to offload Ugarte, and be able to sign Sadiki in the same deal, it would certainly kill two birds with one stone.
