Roberto De Zerbi breaks his silence over his future at Marseille after re-emerging as a contender to become Manchester United’s next permanent head coach in the summer.
Ineos did not think they would be parting ways with Ruben Amorim midway through the 2025/26 season.
That tells you how unhappy Sir Jim Ratcliffe was when Amorim challenged Ineos during a press conference, after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road.
Amorim’s dismissal led to Darren Fletcher becoming caretaker head coach for two matches, but the former Scotland international has since returned to his role as United’s U18s coach.
Then, Carrick was appointed head coach until the end of the season. He secured three points in his first game back at Old Trafford, with United beating Man City 2-0 on Saturday.

The next test for Carrick will see United travel to Arsenal in the Premier League. It’s a fixture that poses different challenges to the game against City.
Only time will tell if Carrick can get the required results to secure Champions League football. That achievement could see the 44-year-old become a serious contender for the permanent position.

Roberto De Zerbi responds to Man Utd job links
After giving Carrick the head coach job for the remainder of the season, United will continue to search for a permanent option to take the first team forward in the coming years.
Roberto De Zerbi was considered a candidate for the United job in 2024, but the admiration for the Italian coach seemingly remains after helping Brighton and Marseille improve in recent years.
After an impressive stint at Brighton, De Zerbi moved to Marseille in 2024, signing a three-year contract.
Marseille finished second in Ligue 1 in its first season, and they’ve remained competitive this season.
De Zerbi was asked about his future at a pre-match press conference ahead of Marseille’s Champions League clash with Liverpool.
“My focus is on Marseille,” De Zerbi told reporters, as quoted by Goal.
“I wanted to come here, I’m here before a very important match and there’s nothing else on my mind.
“I feel good here and I have nothing to say about the future, we’ll talk about that later.
“I feel very good in this city and this club.”

Hopefully, Marseille can get a positive result over Liverpool. That could result in De Zerbi’s stock rising among United fans.
Mason Greenwood faces Liverpool in the Champions League
Former United striker Mason Greenwood is enjoying a prolific season at Marseille, after scoring 20 goals in 26 games across all competitions.
Greenwood could also make his sixth appearance against Liverpool, if he starts for Marseille.
The former United academy graduate has played five games, scoring one goal and registering one assist. He only won one of those matches.
