Man United legend Cristiano Ronaldo wins multi-million legal case against former club - report

Former Manchester United attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has won a legal case against his former club.

Career

Cristiano Ronaldo joined Manchester United in 2003 and left the club in 2009 after winning the Champions League in 2008 and three league titles.

He played a vital role for Real Madrid from 2009 to 2018, winning four Champions League titles during his time in the Spanish capital.

The Portuguese star left Madrid in 2018 and joined Juventus, winning two Serie A titles. He famously left the club in 2021 and made a nostalgic return to Old Trafford.

It did not last long, though, as after a controversial interview with Piers Morgan in November 2022, he was released by the club and joined Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where he still plays to this day.

Juventus legal issues

Ronaldo did not just leave Manchester United on difficult terms but also his former club Juventus.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Mundo Deportivo) report that, “Cristiano Ronaldo has secured another legal victory against Juventus. Turin labour judge Gian Luca Robaldo has ruled in the long-running dispute between the two parties concerning the Portuguese star’s salary. The case dates back to 2021, when CR7 left the Turin club to sign for Manchester United.”

The Italian paper goes on to state that, “the judge rejected Juventus’ appeal, meaning they will not be entitled to recover the €9.8 million (approximately €11 million including interest) stipulated in the April 2024 arbitration award and already paid to Cristiano Ronaldo.”

In addition, the club will cover the legal costs but it will have no financial impact on its accounts, as the sum had already been paid and declared in the 2023-24 financial year.

The issue arose during the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, when Juventus agreed with the players over an “alleged fictitious waiver of some monthly salaries” to deal with the huge financial pressures suffered that year.

What’s more, the board agreed in 2021 with Cristiano Ronaldo, through a document, on the deferred payment of €19.5 million as gross salary, but it was never actually paid to the Manchester United legend owing to his transfer to Old Trafford that summer.

The lawsuit began in 2023 and Juventus’ initial appeal against the decision was rejected.
