Mason Greenwood's impressive club performance has not been mirrored on the international stage.
The former Manchester United striker has emerged as one of Ligue 1's most lethal finishers since joining Marseille in 2024. The 24-year-old clinched the league's Golden Boot last season, sharing the honour with Ousmane Dembele, as both players scored 21 goals.
Greenwood has maintained his scoring prowess this season, leading the league with 12 goals and tallying 20 across all competitions. Before his £26.6million transfer to France, Greenwood faced charges of rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour in 2022, which were subsequently dropped. Greenwood vehemently denied all allegations.
During his tenure at United, he was viewed as a future star for both club and country, earning his first England cap in 2020 - his only appearance for the Three Lions to date.

However, his legal troubles brought his international career with England to a halt and he has not been recalled to the squad since. Prior to Euro 2024, ex-England manager Gareth Southgate stated unequivocally that he would not consider Greenwood and current boss Thomas Tuchel has previously confessed that the forward is "not in his thoughts".
The German manager stated last year: "I have not spoken to him until now. I have not spoken to him or his camp. My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn't give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team."

Although Greenwood submitted the necessary paperwork to switch his international allegiance to Jamaica, he has yet to represent the nation, despite being anticipated for selection in Jamaica's World Cup 2026 qualifying matches against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago last September.
With an impressive tally of 42 goals in 62 appearances for Marseille, Greenwood has proven to be excellent value for the French club, who paid United an additional £5m last season after securing Champions League qualification.

The financial benefits from offloading Greenwood could continue to accumulate for United, who shrewdly included a substantial 50% sell-on clause in his Marseille deal. Should the Ligue 1 outfit decide to sell him, United stand to receive nearly half of the profit from any future transfer fee.
Following his contribution to his team's 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in November, Greenwood faces another English side this Wednesday as Liverpool visit the Stade Velodrome in the Champions League
The forward has managed just one goal against Arne Slot's side across five encounters, with his solitary strike coming during United's 3-2 FA Cup fourth round triumph over their rivals in 2021.
