Manchester United almost signed a Premier League star in the summer, reports now suggest he could join a UCL side.

Manchester United have had a quiet transfer window in terms of players signed so far, despite everything that has gone on behind the scenes at the club. It has been very unlike the summer, when the Red Devils made some huge signings ahead of the season.

The Red Devils were intent on signing proven Premier League talent, with the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha joining the side. Both have helped to transform the United front four, and they are now really beginning to click, especially Mbeumo, who has been excellent.

However, United also opted to sign a couple of younger, less proven players too, with the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens joining the club. The latter was chosen over an experienced PL star.

Emi Martinez could join Inter after a failed Man United move

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has never been short of praise for Martinez. He was quoted by Yahoo Sports earlier this season. He said: “For me, he’s the best goalkeeper in the world. We have the best goalkeeper in the world.”

However, Martinez may not remain at Villa Park for much longer, as Sky Sports is reporting that Inter are considering a move to sign the Argentinian shot-stopper. It is understood that the Italian side wants an experienced keeper to replace 33-year-old Yann Sommer in the summer.

It has also been said that Martinez would have to reduce his wages to get a deal to join Inter; he could stay at Aston Villa, with his contract due to run until 2029, when he will be 36 years-old.

Senne Lammens has been a great signing

It has shown to be a good decision, as the Belgium international could be United’s first choice keeper for several years to come, as he is younger. Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been full of praise for the 23-year-old, saying that he was a fantastic summer addition.

Ferguson said in an interview with Tribuna in December: “I think the appointment of the goalkeeper [Senne Lammens] has made a difference. He's young at 23, he’s quick, a big lad, good feet and hands, and I think that helps. I think they have needed that player. United have always had inspirational players over the years. I think that has helped.”

Lammens’ success comes after a period of lacklustre goalkeeper play from Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, so it seemed a great decision to pick him over Martinez in the summer.
