Manchester United are in yet another transitional period, with Michael Carrick in the driving seat for the second half of the season.
The Red Devils parted ways with Ruben Amorim at the beginning of the month and have since appointed Carrick to take charge for the remainder of the campaign.
Despite a lot of negative reaction in the media, the former Middlesbrough boss led United to a comfortable and convincing win over Manchester City in the derby last weekend, which has given supporters a boost of confidence in the appointment.
In terms of transfer business, there are under two weeks left for the club to get deals over the line, and they haven’t been short of links to potential targets.
It was reported in the new year that Manchester United had a verbal agreement with Antoine Semenyo for a January move; however, after ‘low-balling’ on wages, it pushed the winger into the arms of Manchester City.
As a result, the Red Devils are clearly on the lookout for a new attacking option to bolster their forward line, and reports are now suggesting they have moved on.
According to The Athletic, Manchester United are eyeing a move for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande.
The report suggests they are joined in their interest by Tottenham Hotspur and several other European clubs; however, there is an eye-watering €100m (£87m) asking price involved.
It is claimed that the Red Bull empire’s managing director, Oliver Mintzlaff, is adamant the player will remain in Germany for the foreseeable future.
Who is Yan Diomande?
There is no doubt that Diomande is one of the hottest youth prospects in Europe at the moment, and interest in his services is only likely to grow.
In an ideal scenario, United would be able to get a deal done this month to avoid becoming entangled in a bidding war with other elite clubs across Europe in the summer.
The 19-year-old talent – once hailed as “sensational” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – has scored seven goals and provided four assists in 18 appearances this season, despite only making his Bundesliga debut in August.
Dubbed Red Bull’s ‘best prospect since Erling Haaland’ and scouted by former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, Diomande boasts outstanding strengths in finishing and dribbling, alongside an impressive passing range, and is renowned for his blistering pace.
Speaking about his own abilities, the teenage winger has shown strong self-awareness and a willingness to reflect on areas for development:
“My style is explosive, fast, and physically strong. Quick, agile, and also a finisher. I know I am not yet a perfect finisher, but I am only 19. With time, it will come – and I will become a killer in front of goal.”
It remains unclear whether Manchester United will test Leipzig’s resolve this month, but there is no doubt that Diomande’s future is one to watch closely.
