Manchester United have tabled a formal offer for Al Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves, according to Fichajes.
The Red Devils have had a mixed campaign and currently sit fifth in the Premier League table following their 2-0 win over Manchester City this past weekend, with interim manager Michael Carrick making the perfect start to life in the dugout after replacing Ruben Amorim.
But the club are said to be hopeful of adding to their squad this month to continue that momentum and hopefully qualify for next season's Champions League, and a midfielder is believed to be the top priority if the opportunity arises.
Man Utd Make Offer for Ruben Neves
Ruben Neves
Neves, who has been described as 'exceptional' by manager Simone Inzaghi, is out of contract with Saudi giants Al Hilal this summer, and so far there has been no agreement reached over a deal to extend his stay in the Middle East.
That has seen the Portugal international linked with a move back to Europe, and according to reports in Spain, INEOS have made their move to bring him back to the Premier League by tabling a formal £20m offer for his services.
United are prepared to pay the significant sum despite his contract status, as they believe that his arrival this month could help them to secure a Champions League spot, rather than waiting until the summer and facing more competition for his signature. It's also understood that Neves would accept a big pay cut from his current £340,000-a-week wages in Saudi Arabia to make the move.
Carrick is also prepared to offer him a leading role in his midfield alongside the likes of Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and fellow countryman Bruno Fernandes in order to convince him to join, although Neves' preference would be a move to join Real Madrid.
Neves Would be Perfect for Man Utd Midfield

After Amorim isolated Mainoo on the sidelines, the young English superstar showed how crucial his skillset can be going forward. He's able to keep the ball in tight spaces, play long passes and also shield the defence well, and Neves would provide a perfect foil for him for the rest of the season.
He has Premier League experience from his time at Wolves, and he would also be open to the move. At £20m, there aren't many better bargains out there on the market, and United should be doing all they can to get this deal over the line this month.
It's not often a player of his quality is available, nevermind at a cut-price, and he would fit like a glove at Old Trafford. This deal feels like a no-brainer.
