Manchester United may have already received a transfer decision from one of their top targets

Manchester United are beginning a new chapter once again under Michael Carrick and the Red Devils head coach has arrived at the perfect time to put his stamp on the squad this month.

Updates regarding a long-term midfield target for United have emerged, as details over the player’s transfer preference are revealed amidst the belief that rival clubs are queuing up for the signature of the former Premier League star.

Ruben Neves ‘blow’ following Real Madrid interest

Latest reporting from Spain states that United are set to be dealt a ‘blow’ when it comes to the signing of Ruben Neves, who already reportedly has his heart set on a move to Real Madrid.

Neves made 253 appearances for Wolves including 13 in the Europa League in 2019/20, before completing a £47m move to the Saudi Pro League in June 2023 despite interest from United during his time at Molineux. The 28-year-old is speculated to be set for a return to Europe but has reportedly ‘chosen’ the Bernabeu as his next destination.

His name is believed to be ‘above all’ which could arrive to strengthen the Real midfield as early as this month.

‘Neves wants Real Madrid this winter’ - Spanish journalist

Spanish newspaper AS, quoting Cadena SER journalist Anton Meana, have relayed his comments: "Ruben Neves wants to sign for Real Madrid in this winter market. Coaches of the football department believe that the team needs to reinforce the midfield, but the board have doubts about his performance.

"Due to his contract ending in June, they do not see it necessary to pay a transfer fee for him this month. The player has a very juicy renewal offer from Al Hilal, but he wants to play for Los Blancos."

The lure of Real Madrid is a massive one for any player and the La Liga giants often get their way when they set their sights on a new signing. United will hope that the attraction of a return to the Premier League will be enough to secure the future of Neves, who at just 28 and with 63 Portugal caps to his name has much to offer back in England’s top flight.

Other midfield targets include the likes of Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba, but a deal for any of the young Premier League trio is not expected to be possible until next summer at the earliest, as United continue to seek a long-term revamp of their midfield.
