Casting 10 Manchester United legends for potential TV drama series

Manchester United have reached a multi-million-pound deal to create a dramatised retelling of the club’s history.

It has emerged that Manchester United are set to work with a major production company on a TV series that will dig into stories from the club’s past.

According to The Athletic, United have a deal with North American production company Lionsgate, with a similar concept to The Crown, which was a six-season historical drama series that details the reign of British monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

Lionsgate is the major studio that has produced and distributed the likes of The Hunger Games, John Wick and Twilight.

However, the deal reached is dependent on whether the show is produced and sold, with potential royalties to be shared between United and Lionsgate.

Director and script writer Jed Mercurio has been involved in discussions over the project, which is fitting given he is a childhood United fan.

There is no shortage of stories that can be told from United’s history, although fans will hope anything produced is accurate without too much dramatisation.

10 actors who could play roles in Manchester United series

With a new series in the pipeline, based on United’s incredible history, who should be cast to play the roles of club legends?

United In focus has created a list of ten actors who could play roles in the new United series.

There are many storylines for the script writers to cover such as the formation of Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, the Munich Air disaster in 1958, and how Sir Matt Busby rebuilt his team before delivering the club’s first European Cup final triumph 10 years later.

Sir Alex Ferguson would begin to turn United into English football’s dominant force 26 years later, winning the first of his 13 Premier League titles. The legendary Scot also won the Champions League twice, including the iconic Treble in 1999.

Without further ado, here are 10 actors who could be considered to play the roles of United legends:

Eric Cantona must play Eric Cantona

After shocking the football world by retiring in 1997, Eric Cantona transitioned into a full-time career in cinema and television.

Cantona has since appeared in multiple productions, ranging from French dramas to international films, such as Elizabeth (1998), Looking for Eric (2009) and Inhuman Resources (2020).

So, when it comes to casting Cantona in the new United series, I would argue that there isn’t a better man to play the role than The King himself.

It is also worth mentioning that leading actors David Tennant, Jack O’Connell and Eanna Hardwicke have all played the roles assigned to them previously.

Tennant and O’Connell both featured in a film on the Munich Air Disaster, while Hardwicke plays Keane in the newly released Saipan.
