Time is running out in the transfer window and Manchester United remain linked with potential deals before the deadline. While Ruben Amorim hadn't anticipated significant activity, Michael Carrick could face a different situation. United are keen to strengthen their midfield, and with Bruno Fernandes now operating in a more advanced role, Kobbie Mainoo seems to have returned to contention. The club may need additional depth to compete effectively, though their cup eliminations have left them with a restricted fixture list to provide playing time.
Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson have been mentioned in connection with substantial moves to Old Trafford but are improbable targets for imminent bids. United remain associated with alternative possibilities that could materialise more quickly, however. Former Premier League stars Ruben Neves and Ruben Loftus-Cheek could become available in the coming days. A transfer for either would likely prove less costly. Here, we take a look at the latest United transfer news...

Ruben Neves saga takes turn
Real Madrid have no interest in pursuing Ruben Neves this month, according to Cadena SER. It is suggested that Los Blancos president Florentino Perez is reluctant to bring in new players during January.
Portuguese publication, Record, echoes similar sentiments, suggesting that Perez is hesitant to splash out millions on Neves this month. The former Wolves star's contract with Al Hilal is set to expire in the summer.
This could pave the way for United to swoop in. It's reported that United are prepared to part with £17.4million to secure his services in January.
Deal agreed for exit
Norwich are nearing a deal for United's young talent Harry Amass, according to the Manchester Evening News. The full-back impressed during his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday in the first half of the season and now looks set to ply his trade elsewhere for the remainder of 2025/26.
With injuries to Lucien Mahovo and Jeff Schlupp leaving a void, Norwich are making headway in their pursuit of the 18-year-old. Recent discussions have seemingly nudged Amass' future towards East Anglia.

Following a victory over West Brom, Norwich boss Philippe Clement said: "We're busy with several players and several positions, and I hope we can get everything over the line. I know everybody's working hard on that.
"We had a lot of talks also this week with several players and after the talks they were really interested in the project, this type of result will help also, because several players have the idea maybe, 'Yes, but you're in a relegation spot and until the end of the season you are going to play relegation football and kick and rush because you're in trouble'.
"These games like this, help also. So I hope this will help some players also over the line. We are busy with several guys."
Loftus-Cheek latest
Aston Villa have lodged an enquiry for Ruben Loftus-Cheek just days after he was 'offered' to United. The former Chelsea academy graduate has slipped down the hierarchy at AC Milan and could be loaned out as he aims to secure his place in the World Cup squad.
Villa are seeking reinforcements following an injury to Boubacar Kamara, who is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign. The Athletic claim that Unai Emery's outfit could look to secure a midfielder on loan, with Loftus-Cheek understood to be under consideration.
The Midlands club have already been unsuccessful in their pursuit of Conor Gallagher this month, with Tottenham tabling a permanent offer to Atletico Madrid. Loftus-Cheek was previously reported to have been proposed to United, with 'exploratory' discussions said to have occurred.
