Report: Man Utd in talks over shock move for 'Ballon d'Or worthy' star after clause reveal

Manchester United chiefs have held internal talks over a controversial shock move to bring Mason Greenwood back to Old Trafford, according to Football Insider.

The Red Devils announced in August 2023 that the forward would be leaving Old Trafford following a six-month investigation into his conduct, following an arrest and charges raised against him, including rape and assault.

Those charges were dropped in February 2023, but United decided at the time it wasn't the right decision for the Englishman to continue his career at the 'Theatre of Dreams' after he admitted he had made mistakes.

Greenwood joined Getafe on loan shortly after United's decision, before moving to Marseille on a permanent deal 12 months later.

United Consider Greenwood Return

Having included a buy-back clause in the deal when they sold Greenwood to Marseille in 2024, United are now considering bringing the prolific forward back to Manchester, according to Football Insider.

The clause allows the Red Devils to sign the 24-year-old for a lower fee than he is worth in the current market, which is understandably an attractive proposition given his form for the Ligue 1 club.

The one-cap England international has scored a remarkable 42 goals in 63 matches for Marseille since making the switch to the south of France, while contributing a further 12 assists. His form has led him to be described as 'worthy of the Ballon d'Or' by his manager, Roberto De Zerbi.

When it was suggested that Greenwood could be reintegrated by United in 2023, it was understandably met with a lot of opposition from various different groups before all parties agreed an exit was the best outcome for all involved.

What Other Business Could United do in January?

Manchester United first team coach Michael Carrick looks on

If there is one position United are most likely to strengthen before the February 2 deadline, it will be in midfield.

GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs has already revealed that the Red Devils have held 'secret' talks to bring in a new midfielder from abroad before the February 2 deadline, although a new addition is still not guaranteed to happen.

United want to make sure the opportunity is right and makes financial sense before giving the green light to a mid-season move.

The latest name linked is former Leicester City star Wilfried Ndidi, with the Nigeria international said to be keen on a return to England just six months after moving to play in Turkey for Besiktas.

Medical Expected Today

While United are looking at incoming deals, one player is set to complete a loan exit from Old Trafford imminently.

According to Sky Sports, Harry Amass is expected to undergo a medical on Thursday ahead of a temporary switch to Norwich City until the end of the season.

The 18-year-old impressed on a similar deal with Sheffield Wednesday in the first half of the season, but now he is set to move to Carrow Road until June.
